Every bead in the brown pearl necklace has a story

The round dark brown pearls are coming from Cambodia, where I found them in a little pearl dealer in Pnom Penh. This string was the only available and the lady had some trouble selling them for ‘my’ price. They are unique.

The pearls are combined with decorated Thai silver tubes. These silver beads are made by the Karen people that live in Northern Thailand and Laos. They are silver smiths for all their lives, and it is a tradition in this tribe already for centuries. The silver amount is about 5% higher than the well-known sterling silver, and that amount comes to 97%. It makes the beads a bit softer so that the silver is easier to work with and the decorations are stunning.

The necklace weighs only 30 grams/1,05 ounces, so you hardly feel it, but it sure will be noticed.
