3+ Ways Color Boosts Unique Jewelry Style

A few years ago, I decided it was time to give my website a complete makeover. The style needed a refresh, and the tones had to feel more modern – in short, it was time for something new. For the photos, a professional photographer was called in, and I was heavily made up, something I never wear. But according to the experts, it wouldn’t be noticeable in the pictures. Protesting didn’t help. There was also a color consultant who came to my house with a set of fabrics to determine which shades were “mine.” The idea was that if we used my personal palette on the website, it would become more personal.

It turned out to be quite a fun afternoon. First, I had to guess which shades I thought suited me best, and then the expert would give her verdict. My choices, of course, were immediately dismissed as unsuitable. After a long session of draping fabric after fabric around my shoulders, it turned out that my instinct had been right all along. The colors I had chosen did suit me, although we both agreed they were not ideal for a website. Eventually, we found a compromise, and I’ve now had a website for several years that I’m truly happy with, and so are my customers.

What I learned from the whole experience is that hues really matter, and not every shade suits everyone. I’ve been telling my customers the same thing for years: a necklace, a pair of earrings, or any other piece of jewelry should enhance you. Otherwise, it adds nothing. That special effect can come from the shape, the material, or, most often, from the shade itself.

This blog is all about choosing tones for jewelry that make you shine. But before we dive in, a little disclaimer. Once, a customer asked me if I had earrings that matched the color of her bright pink nail polish. I had to disappoint her; nature cannot be adjusted that easily. The shades of gemstones cannot be changed; you’ll have to adapt your nails to the stone, not the other way around.

    Winter and summer types

Not everyone fits the same palette. You’ve probably heard about seasonal color analysis, winter and summer types, for example. Both are considered cool tones, but they differ in brightness and depth. A summer type usually has fair skin with a pink undertone, ash-blond or light brown hair, and light eyes, blue, gray, or green. Winter types, on the other hand, often have darker hair, higher contrast between skin, hair, and eyes, and cool undertones.

If you’re a winter type, deep and clear shades like royal blue, emerald green, or burgundy red will make you glow. Summer types shine in softer shades, dusty pink, lavender, and misty blue, for example. Knowing which palette suits you can make a huge difference, especially when choosing jewelry. The right hue can highlight your natural features and make your whole appearance feel more balanced.

Why does color matter in jewelry?

Colors have power. They shape how we feel, how we present ourselves, and how others see us. In jewelry, the choice of shade goes beyond decoration; it becomes an expression of identity. Psychologically, hues influence our emotions and even our physiology. Warm shades like red, yellow, and orange can spark energy, passion, and enthusiasm, while cooler tones such as blue and green tend to calm the mind and bring relaxation.

Jewelry is the perfect medium to play with shades. It sits close to your skin, reflects light, and interacts with your movement. A turquoise pendant can brighten your face, while a deep red pair of earrings can make you feel bold and confident. In many ways, wearing jewelry is like wearing emotion in visible form.

How to choose the best color for you

Choosing the right shades is partly about aesthetics but mostly about intuition. I always tell my customers: choose what feels right, not just what matches your outfit. If a shade resonates with you, it will show. For instance, someone who feels calm and grounded might gravitate toward earthy browns or mossy greens. Someone who craves energy and excitement might be drawn to vivid reds or oranges.

Your skin tone also plays a role. If your complexion has a warm undertone, think golden or peachy hues, gold jewelry, and warm gemstones like amber or citrine will make your skin glow. If your undertone is cool, more pink or bluish–silver jewelry and cooler stones like lapis lazuli or amethyst will enhance that freshness. And if your tone is neutral, you can wear both gold and silver, or even mix them for a playful, modern look.

    The language of color

Shades are emotions in visible form. In my work as a jewelry designer, the tone is often the starting point of an idea, not the shape or material, but the feeling a hue evokes. Each stone, bead, or metal has its own character. Sometimes it’s a piece of lapis lazuli that draws me in, a deep blue with tiny golden specks like a night sky. Other times it’s a piece of garnet, dark red and full of fire, reminding me of a glowing hearth after a long day at a market.

    The colors of winter

Winter brings a very different palette from summer. While spring and summer invite light and transparent tones, winter calls for depth. When the air gets colder, and the light softens, I find myself reaching for darker hues: deep blue, burgundy red, brown, and black. These shades have a warmth, a richness, a sense of comfort that fits the season perfectly. They tell quiet stories without words, and that’s exactly what I want my jewelry to express.

Deep blue feels like calm and strength. Burgundy red speaks of warmth and connection. Brown is grounding, it’s the color of the earth, of reliability, of memory. And black, often misunderstood as somber, is for me the color of elegance and mystery. Together, they form a symphony of contrast and harmony, of silence and emotion.

    What color do to you

On markets, I often see how people react to hues. A woman picks up a blue necklace and says, “This one feels calm.” Another holds a red pendant and smiles, “This makes me happy.” They don’t think about it; it’s instinctive. That’s the beauty of shades: they speak directly to our emotions. That’s why I try to create collections that offer something for everyone, something for those seeking peace, something for those wanting to feel strong, and something for those looking for warmth. Jewelry is more than an accessory; it’s self-expression, a voice in tones.

    Wearing color with intention

My advice is simple: don’t just choose jewelry to match your outfit. Choose it to match how you want to feel that day. Need calm? Wear blue. Want to feel confident and visible? Choose red. Looking for stability or a sense of grounding? Try brown. And for moments when you just want to let go, black is the perfect choice. That way, your jewelry becomes more than decoration; it becomes a small reminder of your mood, your energy, your story.

In conclusion: colors as a connection

Colors are more than just visual choices; they are a form of connection. Every piece of jewelry I create carries a fragment of that language. The colors I use reflect not only the seasons but also moods, memories, and moments of meaning. In my winter collection, you’ll find hues that bring warmth when the world outside turns cold, yet also express the quiet strength of stillness. I hope that everyone who wears one of my pieces carries a touch of that emotion with them, a small sense of calm, beauty, or power.

The upcoming winter collection is a celebration of that connection. As the days grow shorter and the light softens, I’ve been working on designs that evoke a feeling of warmth and closeness. Deep blue, burgundy red, brown, and black form a palette that feels both powerful and comforting. The collection will soon be available on my website and at the first Christmas markets, and I can’t wait to see how these tones find their way to the people who will wear them. The people who will wear them.

Finding the perfect jewelry isn’t always easy; it’s about more than just color. The right piece can highlight your best features and make you shine even more. Shape, material, and even details like the length of a necklace or earrings all play a role in what suits you best.
